The Problem

In the U.S., drowning is the leading cause of death for children age 1 to 4. It is also a leading cause of death for adults. The most common place adults drown is in natural bodies of water. The vast majority of people who drown in natural bodies of water aren’t wearing a lifejacket. Let’s change that!

The Solution

We have two campaigns that we want everyone to join!

The first is the #JacketUpForLife campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to encourage everyone, no matter the age or swimming ability, to wear a lifejacket in and around natural bodies of water. This includes wearing a lifejacket on boats and other watercraft. Emergencies can happen to anyone, and natural bodies of water make rescue particularly difficult in a drowning event. Wearing a lifejacket significantly reduces the risk of drowning in natural bodies of water.

The hashtag #JacketUpForLife has several different components. The first is to remind people that lifejackets really do save lives (JacketUpForLife, lifejackets save lives). The second is to encourage the use of a lifejacket at every stage of life (JacketUpForLife). The third is to get people jacked up about this campaign (JacketUpForLife, “Jack it up”)!

The second is the #FloatingFamily campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to encourage parents and caregivers to not only make sure their children wear lifejackets but to also wear lifejackets themselves. Parents and caregivers set the example for children with their actions far more than their words. If every parent and caregiver wore a lifejacket every time they were in or around natural bodies of water, children will be far more likely to do the same when they become adults.

Pledge

As an adult committed to the safety of my family and community, I pledge to uphold the highest standards of water safety. I understand the inherent risks of natural bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers, quarries, and oceans.

Recognizing that drowning is a leading cause of death, I acknowledge the vital role lifejackets play in reducing this risk. Therefore, I pledge to wear a lifejacket myself and ensure my children wear theirs whenever we are in or around natural bodies of water, regardless of swimming ability or proximity to boats and other watercraft.

I understand the importance of leading by example for my children and community. By wearing a lifejacket myself, I demonstrate the importance of responsible water recreation and prioritizing safety.

By signing this pledge, I affirm my dedication to promoting a culture of responsible water recreation. Together, we can create a community where every family member embraces the importance of wearing a lifejacket, thus reducing water-related accidents and deaths.
