Toddler Swim Lessons

Toddler Swim Lessons in Knoxville, TN

2 years old is a great time to start or continue swim lessons! Drowning is the leading cause of death for children age 1 – 4, according to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance. We want all of our toddler students to have a great foundation of basic swimming and water safety skills.ย Take toddler swim lessons with us in Knoxville, TN so your child can learn to be safer in the water.

What swimming skills can a 2-year-old acquire?

A toddler that is 2 years old can acquire a variety of skills depending on their developmental abilities. Our goal for our 2-year-old students is to reach Level 2, and even Level 3 depending on the student. If your toddler student reaches Level 3, they will most likely work on the “roll over” breathing technique. They will more than likely not reach Level 4 until 3 years old, but acquiring Level 4 skills at 2 years old is not unheard of! Getting toddlers started as young as possible makes all the difference when they are older!

How long will it take for my toddler to learn to swim?

That is a very broad question and depends on the studentโ€™s age, previous experience, how quickly they learn, and what exactly you mean by โ€œlearn to swim.โ€ย  We prefer to think in terms of milestones. The previous question addressed what is realistic for a toddler to learn during swim lessons. Acquiring those skills is only possible with consistent swim lessons and practice time throughout the year.

Few students can swim independently at age 2, many students can swim independently at age 3, most students can swim independently at age 4, and nearly all students can swim independently at age 5 and older. Again, this requires practice and swim lessons throughout the year on a consistent basis.

Will I have to get in with my 2-year-old student?

We require an adult to get in with their student for swim lessons until they are a Level 2, which is when the toddler can hold their breath for 5 seconds under water while being held.

What about ISR swim lessons for infants?

ISR swim lessons are a controversial topic for many. That is why we dedicated an entire article to the subject. We did a lot of research and listened to a lot of parents before giving our opinion publicly. You can learn about our stance on ISR swim lessons for toddlers HERE.

Think about a group class. There are 3 to 6 students in a class. How much attention are they really getting from their instructor? How much practice time is really possible in a 30 minute class?

Not much, which is why we offer 15 minute private lessons. They will get more attention and practice time in their 15 minute private lesson than they ever will in a group class that lasts 30 minutes.

If you still don’t believe that 15 minutes will work for you, check out our reviews on Googleย andย Facebook!

Our recommendations generally revolve around your family’s goals. Do you have a trip coming up that you want your kids to be ready for? Then you should book lessons as frequently as possible, even every day if you can. Do you want your kids to swim a year from now? Once a week will do just fine.

As you can guess, the more frequently you take lessons, the faster they will improve.

We HIGHLY recommend children 8 and under book 15 minute lessons until they are a level 4. Once they reach level 4, we don’t have a preference either way.ย

Students over 8 years old or level 4 and up can handle 30 minute, although 15 minutes works great too!

Ultimately, the choice is up to you. A 30 minute lesson obviously costs more than a 15 minute lesson, but we are here to serve you how you think is best for your family.
